# Suffering Bastard

> Suffering Bastard, the IBA official recipe: cognac, gin, lime juice, Angostura bitters and ginger beer. Shaken and served long over ice.

Cognac, gin, lime, bitters and ginger beer. Joe Scialom’s 1940s hangover cure from Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo.

- Strength: about 10.5% ABV once diluted by ice, about 1.4 standard drinks (14 g of alcohol each)
- Volume: 167 ml (5⅝ oz) before ice, about 238 ml in the glass
- Taste: Sour, Sparkling, Spicy

## Ingredients

Amounts are for one drink. Ounces use 30 ml to the ounce.

- 30 ml (1 oz) [Cognac or brandy](https://jigger-5rd.pages.dev/ingredients/cognac/index.md)
- 30 ml (1 oz) [Gin](https://jigger-5rd.pages.dev/ingredients/gin/index.md)
- 15 ml (½ oz) [Lime juice](https://jigger-5rd.pages.dev/ingredients/lime/index.md)
- 2 dashes [Angostura bitters](https://jigger-5rd.pages.dev/ingredients/angostura/index.md)
- Top up [Ginger beer](https://jigger-5rd.pages.dev/ingredients/ginger-beer/index.md)

## Method

1. Pour all ingredients except the ginger beer into a cocktail shaker and shake well with ice.
2. Pour unstrained into a Collins glass, or the original Suffering Bastard mug.
3. Top up with ginger beer.

## Garnish

Mint sprig and optionally an orange slice as well.
